This is a video of photos that I took during a school trip to Holland and Belgium. The photos in this video are from (in chronological order)
Hill 62 - the only surviving original trenches on the Western Front;
The Menin Gate - 56,000 names of soldiers who were not found from the beginning of the War to July 1917;
Essex Farm Cemetary - on the site of an Advanced Dressing station where John MacCrae wrote 'In Flanders Fields'. It is also where the youngest soldier to die in the war is buried - Valentine Joe Strudwick, who was 15 - He'd been fighting a week.
Langemark Cemetary - the German Cemetary, one of only 3 in Belgium (compared to 250 British). The whole place gives off 'bad vibes' and it really is colder inside than outside.
Canadian memorial
Tyne Cot Cemetary - the largest commonwealth cemetary in the world. 11,000 are buired there, 70% of which are unknown. There is also a wall at Tyne Cot with 32,000 names on from soldiers who were not found from July 1917 to the end of the war.

The music is by Coope Boyes and Simpson. The first track is called 'Standing in Line' and the second is a cutting from the song 'Only Remembered'. Both songs can be found on the album 'Private Peaceful - The Concert'.

  • Can you comment on why the Langemark cemetery seems to give off bad vibes? I'm just very curious ... I have a great interest in WWI and hope to visit Flanders one day...

  • @Hieran1436 I have no idea why, I just does. You don't really notice until you come out. Very spooky.

  • Who can help me to find the MP3 file of this song? I can't find it anywhere!! Help me, because I really like this song and I love the book! :)

  • @buckie035 I can't seem to find a download of this version, but June Tabor does a version on her album Apples, available through iTunes. Hope that helps. :)

  • Hey ollie. there is something about this video that drags me back to it everytime. Its so emotional. I didn't know there was a play of private peaceful. When and where is it on?

  • I don't know about the one man play, but the next performance of Private Peaceful from which this song comes is 31st March at the Holy Trinity Church, Guildford. Not sure if that's near you. details on the Coope, Boyes and Simpson website. :-)

  • excellent photos and good choice of music.

    Try and look up Sarah Morgan's setting of the Cecily Fox-Smith poem, "Home Lads, Home."

  • It looks at a nice Trip. : )

  • I saw the one man play at the E4 underbelly and this music was playing before it started and i keep coming back to listen to this. Not many plays have moved me as much as the ending of this one and the music before hand was just as fantastic. Thank you for uploading!
