During the cold war, people across the globe lived in fear of a cataclysmic nuclear war between the Soviet Union and the United States. Although this era is over, a perhaps more unpredictable age has dawned. Today, more countries have nuclear weapons. Even more are suspected of harboring ambitions to acquire them. The world has mourned over dramatic terrorist attacks committed by groups who would stop at nothing to use a nuclear weapon should they get their hands on one. In response, experts argue that we need strong international law and sound global policy to manage the threats posed by an unstable world. Today, we have the chance to sit down with one such expert.
John Burroughs, executive director of the Lawyers' Committee on Nuclear Policy in New York joined Global Policy Forum to discuss current debates over nuclear weapons, disarmament, and non-proliferation, and the laws global leaders have developed to address these pressing matters.
Enforceable global rules will likely be necessary to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons -- political will can only go so far. However, what is perhaps more important than the rules themselves is their legitimacy. International law must be applied to all equally if complete nonproliferation and disarmament are to become a reality.
Global Policy Forum Associate Salvator Cusimano interviews Dr. John Burroughs, Executive Director of the Lawyers' Committee on Nuclear Policy.
