The only difference between this version and the acoustic one, is a matter of changing the picking pattern a little and the pitch. The pitch here in the video, is altered to the same pitch as the acoustic version here...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmhIUwUzcNE

The reason? I've been playing along with the acoustic version, and I'm too damn lazy to pitch it back up to the standard E that is used in the original song so I just changed the pitch of the version most of you know to play along to instead.

If you try to play along with me and it doesn't sound right, drop all the E's to D#'s and the lone B to Bb. From bass to treble strings, the tuning is EEEEBE (I believe this is the correct tuning used because of the final strummed chord in the song (just add the 5th fret of the A string to the shape and see if it doesn't sound extremely similar). Open E tuning will work also.

The A string comes down to E and so does the G string, FYI. So don't blame me if you pop strings trying to pitch them up lol. The D has to come UP to E though so be careful!

The shape of the chord is, middle finger on the sixth string (low E) and ring finger on the second string (B). This shape never changes, it just moves from 5th fret to the 9th then back to the 4th fret and then 5th again for the verse. Part of the chorus moves from 5th to 7th fret to 9th back to 4th and then repeats.

Alternate pick the notes to the song with the middle E string (D string) hitting every other note pretty much (easiest way is without a pick just using your thumb for the bass and middle string and pointer finger for the high strings but you can certainly use the old plectrum and it's good string skipping practice as well) just about every time.

The picking pattern goes 6,1,4,2 (counting the 6th string as the bass and the first as the treble string). The acoustic version goes 6,2,4,1.

Pretty simple actually, but I still struggle getting the timing perfect as I normally don't play fingerstyle guitar but I think it's pretty good even with a gaffe or two (I'm not going to spend a long time trying to get it perfect).

Whenever a song just seems impossibly difficult to play in standard tuning, I guarantee you there's an alternate tuning being used in most cases (some stuff is just really difficult regardless!) and this is a song I've been trying to nail down for a while now and it is so satisfying playing along with this tune being played properly.

I haven't seen anyone covering it right, so once I figured it out, I just had to share it so you guys can enjoy it too! The main reason I know this way is almost 100% correct is because of the video here....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdTly91orYo

as most people are trying to cover it in standard tuning, which just cannot sound right because it isn't!

BTW, I added a little short tune I wrote and recorded to the end of the video, along with the tab. I call it, "Driven" hope you like it! Yes I claim all rights to that shit too (my song not Dishwallas obviously).

Enjoy!

I believe the song is talking about coping with anxiety and depression and dealing with hopelessness because of the line, "Disarm My Mind, Make It Dry" as if he's talking to a bartender. Get it? MAKE IT DRY? As in, like say, a dry martini?

Many people with depression and anxiety self-medicate with alcohol to "disarm" the wild thoughts and feelings associated with the illness. It works for a while until other issues arise from that and the illness continues to get worse.

Just an observation. Also the line, "Beam Up My Mind, Please" as if he's asking God to take him home. The spirit can be described best as the intellect of the soul, or mind even. Seeing her shape likely deals with the loss of a loved one or a complete heartbreak. Or he probably just means Jim Beam as another reference to alcohol perhaps.

I've been listening to this song for probably a decade now and it never gets old. It's a great song and the melody is just so sweet to the ear.
