To address the increasing capability and availability gaps associated with its aging assets, the Coast Guard initiated the Integrated Deepwater System (IDS). The IDS Program is the largest and most innovative acquisition in the Coast Guard's history. At full implementation, the Integrated Deepwater System includes three classes of new cutters and their associated small boats, upgraded legacy cutters, a new fixed-wing manned aircraft fleet, a combination of new and upgraded helicopters, and both cutter-based and land-based unmanned air vehicles. All of these highly capable assets will be linked with state-of-the-art Command, Control, Communications and Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) systems, and will be supported by integrated logistics.

In the past, the Coast Guard replaced its ships and aircraft as they became obsolete or insupportable on a platform class by platform class basis, on a one for one basis. The IDS Program broke that paradigm by adopting a "system of systems" approach. This system-wide acquisition will ensure compatibility and interoperability of deepwater assets, while providing high-levels of operational effectiveness and the most affordable solution for U.S. taxpayers.

  • GO Coast Guard and dude you are the stupidest person ever piece to think that its not "cool" to stop druggies. YOU ARE RETARDED! The Coast Guard plays a major role in our nations security and i lov e the IDS! Semper Paratus

  • naw all im saying is that the coast guard would be way sicker if they just saved people instead of using 'guns and shit' to confiscate pot

  • That's what the Marines are for lol? Please research before you act like a douche trying to insult the Coast Guard.

  • We are the only of the military forces allowed to operate within the US in a homeland defense capacity. Also, the USCG has fought in every war since it's inception as the Revenue Cutter Service in 1790. The Marines at Guadalcanal would have had much heavier losses if it hadn't been for the only Coastie to recieve the Medal of Honor, SN1 Douglas A. Munro. He died covering the Marine withdrawl from Point Cruz. Do some research, we do much more than pull people out of the water. I AM YOUR SHIELD!

  • How the hell would we "Guard" our "Coast" if we didn't use "Guns and Shit"?
