Interview with a Verizon union worker on strike st old MaBell C.O. across from WTC in NY. She says she doesn't want to pay for health benefits. Right now CWA workers pay NOTHING. What a deal.
She did great but her facts are wrong .. Her statement "They want each member to pay $10k per year for health insurance" is INCORRECT from what i have read - $100 per month or bi monthly for single-a little more for a family (less than $200) - even then that doesn't equal $10k.The holiday statement is incorrect as they give out paid "Floating holidays".So while this person did a great job discussing - the facts she has been told are incorrect..Her number 1 statement should be NO JOBS in INDIA
Yes other people have to pay into medical and it sucks. And I can understand if a struggling company or gov't needs to cut back and wants you to pay more. But what about companies that are at an all time high and are making record profits? Are we to just give back so the company can further line their pockets? Or just give back simply because other non-related companies do? That doesn't make any sense at all. You're supposed to ask for give backs when the company ISN'T making reasonable #'s
All this talk with VZ saying it wants to stay competitive and just wants us to chip in like everyone else so they can provide good service is bullshit. They are one of the most profitable corporations in the world and extending the contract as it was is a drop in the bucket for them. It won't sacrifice and service or cause any discord in the company whatsoever to just extent the contract. What this is really about is union busting and corporate greed.
There is harsh actions on both sides. But there is no question that VZ is wrong at the bargaining table. If we give back any one thing when the Company is at an all time high, making record profits, and had the best quarter they've had in years, what do you think they'll do when the stock drops just the slightest bit? They will say look you gave this back when we were up here now were down half a point, we want this that and the other now.
No CWA did not walk out we were locked out. CWA proposed we work under the old contract and VZ said no. We would have been fired on the spot if we entered the building. I don't necessarily believe in yelling at current managers but hired scabs are different. They aren't just "doing what they were told", it was their choice to be a scab and they deserve no less then what they get. Being a hired scab is anti-middle class, and against good jobs. It's the ultimate sellout.
I agree Mr 140 West. The cause is lost by the behavior of the union. When it finally all goes down the tubes of course the lack of public support will be managements fault. I love their rebuttals to the newspapers...management is blowing it out of proportion and lying about behavior. Explain that to the guy outside West St one hour ago that was holding his middle finger in the face of my peer while the finger wavers kid looked on then with venom asked my peer "WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT?"
unions are a greatl asset to the working class but mobs are a pitiful example of chaos disorder and just plain foolishness. An ORGANIZED job action should be that: an action not an attempt to lose the jobs you are fighting for! The disgusting treatment of human beings just going to work as they are told to do is shameful and does not contribute anyhting to the cause: it takes away from your message. You never stood for us during all our rifs.....
Ignorace is dangerous: This woman understands how to present a cause in a professional manner: These arent SCABS walking into the building: most are doing the same exact thing they were doing Friday before you WALKED OUT. Remember, you were not dismissed you walked out. Management is filling the gaps you left behind so there is at least a company for you to return to. These are not the professionals we are used to having bring the service into our homes : think of the image you are embedding
