Since May of 2006, International Action has installed more than 100 tablet chlorinators in 23 of the poorest neighborhoods of Port-au-Prince. These chlorinators protect water supplies for some 300,000 people. The neighborhoods include Tokyo, Trousable, Simmond Pele, Cite Soleil, Carrefour and Delmas some of the poorest and most dangerous parts of the capital. For some, it is the first help they have had in many years.

In Jalousie in the hills above Port-au-Prince International Action installed a chlorinator which now protects 50,000 people. The nurse in Jalousie reported a major drop in chronic diarrhea cases which she must treat. A municipal laboratory found that germs of typhoid and cholera are no longer present in Jalousies water. People from nearby neighborhoods are crossing into Jalousie to take home safe water.

International Action staff rides the circuit of installed chlorinators once a month to check on maintenance and answer questions by local water boards. International Action encourages local ownership of each water system and teaches the skills needed to sustain the chlorine system for future years. Its 23 neighborhood committees are becoming active in supporting changes in water and other Haitian policies a sign of growing local democracy.

  • To boil water you need coal. Less than 2% of Haiti's forests remain due to people's dependence on fuel wood and charcoal for cooking and heating needs. Deforestation is causing a decline in soil fertility, extensive flooding, and depleted groundwater supplies.

Half of the Haitian population lives in abject poverty and cant afford to buy coal to boil water.

The WHO estimates that diseases associated with dirty water cause some 25,000 deaths per day. You can make your own calculation

  • Chlorine is used for the treatment of drinking water in all developed countries; it is in your tap water and some bottled water!! EPA says: It was disinfectants like chlorine that played the largest role in reducing the role of waterborne diseases outbreaks. The most common drinking water treatment, considered by many to be 1 of the most important scientific advances of the 20th century is disinfection. Most water suppliers add chlorine or another disinfectant to kill bacteria and other germs.

and you sound like a neanderthal. since when are toxins floating in the body (an unnatural state) better than worms (closer to the state of nature)?? get real and get God. you trust man more than nature. you trust man more than God since you would rather have their toxins than his creations (i.e. parasites/worms). i'd rather be from the slums than to be a braindead and brainwashed zombie like you. im through talking to you. you dont have permission to communicate with me any longer

  • Your husband comes from les Cayes? and you sound like your from the slums...better toxins than worms they have been carrying for the pass 100 years...Get real...If your husband is from les Cayes..i am sure a little city water will not hurt him any, if it did he would be living in Kenscoff....sounds like you have a few toxins floating around in your head.
