You could look at senior instructor Jim Marlatt as a kind of matchmaker, introducing students to companies through hands-on projects.
This introduction is first made at a project fair, which is held the second Friday of every fall and spring semesters; more than a dozen companies will be there with projects for students to work on --- usually by undergraduate upperclassmen. In a typical job fair, students showcase their skills to a variety of companies. In the project fair, companies like Target Corp., Vail Resorts and CH2M HILL present projects in the hopes that students will sign on with them.
These are projects that companies may not have enough resources or expertise to address, such as market research, new product development, product promotion, web site design, supply chain audits and process improvement.
