In this video Michael Makin, CEO and President of Printing Industries of America, rebuts president Obama's claim that printing is a waste of cost. This video serves as a reminder that there is still a bright, vibrant future to print with the advent of variable data printing, QR codes, and cross media integration.
This is a response to Obama's video about cutting waste which can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hpd61WfMvk&feature=channel_video_title

Micheal, get real... did you actually watch the video and listen to his words. Your twist on the President's words are a sham. If you want to have a political agenda, do so with your vote during the next election. In the United States, we have the right to vote, but once a person is elected, it is up to each of us to stop the antagonism and get behind the "right thing to do." Your outright lies in addressing this you paint yourself in a very bad light. I personally am ashamed of your comments.

Well done, Michael and PIA, you've managed to make our industry look even more backwards and out of touch. After watching Obama's video, I was shocked at the extent to which you mischaracterize his statements to the point of outright lying. You also come off as completely disingenuous, as you never even directly address the central question of whether the cost of printing and mailing the federal register is appropriate. This childish antagonism is an embarrassment to printers everywhere.

@doricebaty - There was no "bashing" of the industry, he was only talking about the Federal Register. You need to see his video before commenting.

I wonder if Mr. Makin has his own political agenda in making this video. He completely misrepresents everything the President said and I wonder about Mr. Makin's motives for doing so. I don't think all web developers, web hosting services and folk music groups thought the President was saying they were all a waste of money, so why does Mr. Makin think he was saying that about printing and the printing industry?

Well, this is unfortunate for PIA to totally take our President's words and outright lie about what he said. He talked about that document and not the industry. Shame on you, PIA!!!! I am very disappointed and do not support you.

Total overreaction. Obama never said "print is stupid" as implied here. He said "no one reads this thing" which is probably true. Printing as many copies as have been traditionally printed is indeed wasteful, and for Makin to imply that we should just keep printing them because print is great is a problematic position to take.

I think this video, and Mr. Makin's, response is a complete over-reaction. While the President did refer to the printing of the Federal Registers as "stupid spending", he in know way assailed our industry. He pointed out that obvious waste within a Federal program, and made the appropriate decision to try to eliminate it. He also said that they were eliminating the need for overnighting blank containers. Did FEDEX feel slighted for the President's attempt to eliminate overnight shipping?

Mr Obama has to understand that the foundation of printing has been advancement of mankind. Gutenberg's technology led the world out of darkness and into knowledge. Instead of bashing the printing industry let's try focusing on recycling and the fact that govt waste lies in wages paid to individuals whose only purpose is to get re-elected or to put through progams in their own interest or for ludicrous costs way beyond reason.
