In comparison to other countries and not just europe but some places in south america and even our neighbor Canada as well, the US as a whole can be very conservative, you just have to look at the 2012 elections on the republican side to get an idee. The US is MUCH more behind the rest of the western world on gay rights

@Chrisbit1 I wouldn't make a statement generalizing that the US is not open/accepting of gay marriage. There are some parts that are more accepting of gays than others. I am not sure where you previously lived in the US, but in Seattle, WA everyone here accepts the gays, and there are gays everywhere. I have so many gay and lesbian friends and at work they are open and don't feel threatened. I am sure more of the southern states like Kentucky and Alabama are far from LBGT accepting.
