This is a snippet of Horowitz playing a few chords before his first encore. Something to settle an exuberant audience before a quiet piece? Harmonic transition/preparation? You be the judge.

  • Hello! I met your channel today! as is the name of the song that plays Horowitz, in sequence?

  • @MJBKing

    I agree

  • Yes he does this in another video, i think it's Horowitz in Vienna. He also pats the piano at the end.

  • @zambalek It is very curious because on the DVD I cannot find this moment, neither at the beginning nor before Traumereï... In its 1985 Musikverein recital (see my profile), Horowitz plays such chords but at the very beginning of the recital, before the first piece. It is the reason why I said that it seems to be an acoustic test... But perhaps I am wrong.

  • @olyv1 Don't think so. It's just before his first encore (as put forward int he description of this video). As such he already knows what the acoustics are like, since he played his complete programme by then.

I'm reckoning trying to settle down the audience and ready them for the rather quiet and romantic piece to follow.

  • This is not an harmonic preparation at all, Horowitz simply tests the acoustic of the hall full of people, necessary very different than during the repetitions when nobody was there...

  • what happened

  • Wow, I could tell what song he was going to play before the first note sounded... I've seen the video of him playing Träumerei so many times...
