Could you not just mask the eyes and mouth and track them to the puppet? as i noticed around the hair etc it distorts unrealistically. As a smoke user i found this interesting and inspiring i aim to do something similar but mask just the mouth and eyes in place and track it to a null to move with any puppetry might need to write a node for it to do it all in one.
