Blue Morph - Art & Science Meeting

Instalacja Blue Morph, prezentowana przez Nadbałtyckie Centrum Kultury w zabytkowym kościele św. Jana w Gdańsku, jest owocem współpracy artystki i naukowca, Victorii Vesny i Jamesa Gimzewskiego. Blue Morph -- najnowsza ich wspólna interaktywna instalacja -- uświadamia nam, jak nanotechnologie zmieniają nasze postrzeganie świata. Nanotechnologia jest nowoczesnym podejściem badawczym, które odnosi się do zrozumienia właściwości materii w skali nano -- czyli do pojedynczych cząsteczek. Za enigmatycznym tytułem instalacji kryje się nazwa gatunku motyla, który od dawna fascynował uczonych, m.in. ze względu na subtelną optyczną inżynierię. Instalacja Blue Morph stworzona została właśnie przy użyciu obrazów w skali nano oraz dźwięków towarzyszących metamorfozie gąsienicy w motyla. Artyści obserwowali owada w wymiarze nano. Wykorzystali fakt, że piękny błękitny kolor jego skrzydeł to nie pigment, lecz występujące na nich wzory i struktura. W wyniku tej pracy powstała artystyczna fuzja dźwięków, światła i interaktywnej sztuki/nauki.

The Blue Morph installation exhibited by the Baltic Cultural Centre in the historic St. John's Church in Gdańsk, is an outcome of cooperation between an artist and a scientist: Victoria Vesna and James Gimzewski, respectively.
Blue Morph, the most recent of their common interactive installations, helps us realize how nanotechnological innovations change our perception of the world. Nanotechnology is a modern research attitude which relates to the very understanding of the matter qualities on the nanoscale, that is, on the level of single molecules. The enigmatic title of the installation applies the name of a butterfly species which has long fascinated scientists, most of all with respect to its subtle optical engineering system. Blue Morph has been created using nanoscale images and sounds derived from the process of a metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly. The artists have observed the creature in nanoscale. They refer to the fact that the beautiful blue colour of its wings is not produced by pigment, but by the patterns and structure alone. The work is an artistic fusion of sounds, light and interactive art/science.
