Will enough people use high speed rail instead of planes to make it work? And do we need rail at all? KCET's Val Zavala, MTA Board Member Richard Katz, consultant Gloria Ohland and Reason's Adrian Moore debate.

That guy is just so full of himself. Studies show that when you build it, people will ride it. It will help I think Central Valley more than any other part because if you live out there, you're stuck. With this train, they can get an easy access to the SFO airport. The fact that all these other countries have been using these trains for decades and we're now talking about building it is an embarrassment by itself. We need to find a better way when it comes to transportation and this is it.

@ReverendRatspeed How much (more) would a magnetic levitation system cost? Will it be cost effective?

3:13 Remember, highways and roads are heavily subsidized. The railroads had to pay for the maintenance of their right-of-ways themselves. Do trucking companies pay their fair share in taxes to use the roads? No. It's not that rail is an inferior form of transportation. Overwhelming govt. support of highways and airways forced the railroads to their knees.

It needs to be MagLev, though. Twice the speed (500 km/h), way more efficient, and will be able to easily bridge the gap between the Inland Empire and Las Vegas once the time comes. The system they're proposing doesn't do that. I can imagine taking 1 hour to commute from LA to SF... not 2 hours.

If built, I would use it.

Hmm, let me see, 6 hours plus driving and maybe a rush-hour to deal with? It is tyring to drive a long time, then stop for gas, and such. Airplane? Way too long of a wait at the airport. Train, just hop on, get space, and going very fast, hmm, I think I'll take the train thank you.

high speed rail or $1200~$1500 of gasoline per YEAR per PERSON driving an automobile

Yes they will because its better than flying because there no security check point, there no taking off your cloths or shoes at the airport and its way more confortable than Greyhound bus and Driving your own cars. with out High speed train in the U.S. in 2030, they may raise the security at airport, and you may have to strip down naked, and walk through the Metal detector butt naked.
