The Judaism of Jesus

People seem surprised when they hear that anti-semitism keeps creeping up among Christians, but one just needs to do a literal read about the Jews in the New Testament to develop anti-Semitic feelings. This is a root problem that needs to be addressed and clarified, in the direction of Nostra Aetate, an Encyclical of Vatican II that revolutionized the Catholic Church's approach to Jews and Judaism.

With my art, I depart from the tradition of painting Jesus as a non-Jewish man. I paint Jesus, his family, friends. the founders of the church and many of the saints within their Jewish traditions, customs and values. I present this part of their existence which has been absent in most of their portrayals and erased from general consciousness. These images should be kept in mind when reading New Testament passages about the Jews and Judaism such as the "Jews crucified Jesus" (Act. 4:10), "are the sons of the devil" (John 8:44), and are the "enemies of mankind" (Thess. 2:15). Christian anti-semitism is an oxymoron that needs to disappear.




Like good siblings, Jews and Christians can respect and appreciate one another, despite their differences. As a mother of both Christian and Jewish children, I have a vested interest in promoting respect between Christians and Jews.

To communicate the message that Jesus was a Jew, the paintings include modern Jewish symbols that most contemporary viewers would recognize as those representative of Judaism.
