If yuki hadn't found machi (who i hate) he would have fallen in love with tohru and not in the motherly way either. I think that even after what he said, Yuki loves tohru more than he loves machi and he made up all that 'motherly love' stuff just to be noble because he knew tohru loved kyo and not him. Machi was just his second choice when he realised he couldn't have tohru
