Autistic people whose condition prevents them from speaking are making breakthroughs with the help of tablet computers and special applications that allow them to communicate, some for the first time. Lesley Stahl reports.

  • I'm lucky to work in a special ed classroom with an iPad. Yesterday one of our non-verbal kids with ASD wanted to play with bubbles. She kept pointing to the top of the shelf which had many things on it and it was a guessing game. So to her credit, she went to the iPad, found her favorite math app, found the page with the bubble bottles on it and showed it to me. She was rewarded with a shower of bubbles! Thanks Steve Jobs for advancing communication for ASD.

  • this is amazing!!! I'm 21 and volunteer at the high school Autism class every monday and wednesday. I've been with them since my senior year, 3 years ago, and the whole time I been there there was only one non-verbal student, cece, and she loved the ipad!! She really enjoyed the bubble wrap app :) I think its amazing what technology can do for these kids. It opens up so many opportunities and hope :)

  • @paul8kangas The guy that did that study ADMITTED TO LYING. It has nothing to do with vaccines. Try and educate yourself before you talk about something you don't know anything about.

  • El I-Pad está haciendo maravillas entre nuestros niños con autismo :)

  • You're all a bunch of dumbasses to think that the iPad is perfect for ass pies. If you really want to help them with such a stupid device, get them a fucking iPod touch. It'll have the same damn effect, faggots.

  • @salwamatta

    Thank you so much !!

  • Thank you very much ! who have to translate applications but they are very helpful

  • I have a nephew in south georgia born with autism. He is doing great in school, but he still cannot communicate verbibly. He just turned 8.I would love for him to find more help.

  • @Gabrielle69300 @Gabrielle69300 download an app called "autismapps" which will direct you to many helpful apps depending on which use you need.

  • my sister has autisum

  • What if we did not vaccinate half our kids for 5 years,

like the Amish do, and bingo, none of them are autism.

    This is science.

It is not based on belief.

What if taking 3,000 mcg of selenium daily will cure you in 1 year?

    This is science.

  • @paul8kangas and i say it's genetic. me and my bro were vaccinated. he is considered normal in the global view, am the one with the mental illness. it's genetic i was obviously the unlucky one.

  • @paul8kangas vote for Palin while you are at it. Your facts and ambitions are all wrong and hateful. wake up.

  • Stop the vaccination rape of babies.

  • The 2,000% rise in autism was caused

    by a 2,000% rise

in the number of vaccinations given to babies & children.

To test if vaccinations are the cause of autism,

we need to allow half the parents to

decide if their should be vaccinated or not.

What if kids who are not vaccinated

until age 18 do not get autism?

  • Objective C is a bitch

  • I wonder what the fibers in MY language circuit would look like.

  • I'm living in Fance and I have a non verbal kid with ASD.

Where can I find applications for i Pad ?

    Thank you for your aide.

  • I can see why it's so helpfull but also don't want everyone to learn and have their lives revolving around technology wait ... .

  • I'm an ABA therapist and I have seen wonderful things with the Ipad. It is an awesome therapy device!

  • No, no, no! Temple Grandin has AUTISM, not Asperger's! Asperger's doesn't have a speech delay, autism does!

  • @p154831 Because these kids/people have no talent for communication like pen and paper. However responding to images is relativly easy for them, hence pictograms and Ipads.

  • @p154831 First of all,the iPad is bigger and easier to see and second of all, some autistic people can't use their hands because they don't have good motor skills so... Shut up.

  • first of all this app is available for the ipod touch... so right there the autistics could've used the ipod touch. Second of all... why cant an autistic kid just write out what they want on a piece of paper. If its gonna save $1000 i would just write on a piece of paper.
