I am sorry, but your argument is simply non-cogent. There are externalties flowing from university students to the general public (ie, we all benefit form a more educated society). This is the only justification for state subsidization. University football on the other hand has absolutely no externalities; only the people that enjoy watching it gain utility and we can charge them. If they are not willing to pay enough they are essentially saying football is not worth the money it costs. I agree.

Most students may not watch football because they're busy studying. The football players play for their future benefit (as well as fun of course), just like the other students study for their's. Besides, whether other students watch it or not, this seems to be good publicity for the university. So it isn't ALL a waste of money.

Absolutely useless ... Waste of money. Ask any student if they actually watch any football games.
