Police in Japan have launched their biggest ever campaign to try to put an end to organised crime.

The investigation includes trying to find out if the Yakuza gang, Japan's most notorious crime syndicate, played a part in a recent massive accounting scandal at camera giant, Olympus.

If so, the 92-year-old maker of photographic and medical equipment could be de-listed from the Tokyo Stock Exchange in the coming weeks.

In Tokyo's red-light district, where the Yakuza have long held sway, police now patrol the area, ready to shut down businesses run by what Japanese call "anti-social forces".

Police have arresting several alleged crime bosses and exposed the role of the gangs in businesses such as construction and baseball.

Al Jazeera's Steve Chao reports from Tokyo.

go back to your cave or basement.. u dont know what the world looks like

  • There is no such thing as good guys and bad guys. Just good and bad situations any side can be apart of. The way the government operates is like an even larger enforcing anti-social organization...don't see anyone rushing in to stop oligarch's democratic voting placing puppet corporate spokesmen as PM's and Presidents.

  • @MrROTD yes it's true, if you dishonor your gang, you have to chop off your finger.

  • @Tom15452 funny that you say that and Japan has the lowest homicide rate in the whole entire world. Besides get over WWII what are you 80? Probably not. And you didn't experience WWII so STFU. Also instead of posting racist comments just because you're anonymous why don't you have the courage to tell that to someone's face you little piece of shit. Don't generalize an ethnicity. There are good people and bad people everywhere.

  • lol war on a gang you cant kill a gang you can kill a goverment sucks because they both cause greater evil when defending and attacking each other

  • Police stopping the yakuza?? Wait, aren't they suppose to be harassing foreigners instead? The reporter in this video looks Asian, maybe an illegal Chinese. Make him show ID, take him to the station for questioning!

  • I like how so many people are trying to defend the yakuza. When they deal heavily in child porn and forced prostitution of kidnapped women from other countries.

  • Crook Japanese.. what a surprise

  • @weldon29 That's exactly what I'm saying. The mob kills and maims vastly fewer people than government. And more importantly the mob provides people with goods and services they actually want. The mob doesn't force me to sign up for the draft, the mob doesn't force me to give them my hard earned money, the mob doesn't threaten to throw me in a cage if I don't obey them, the mob doesn't restrict my freedoms. The government hurts me ever day, the mob doesn't effect me in any way.

  • shinji ishihara wow dont mess with this guy!!

    i respect this guy

  • @Tom15452 nah, that's every country actually.
