Although she was more famous for her interpretation of Amneris, Ghena Dimitrova was just as impressive as Aida. Here's a sample with Ritorna Vincitor.

  • Even Dimitrova's big & beautiful voice has it's limits. Technically, there's nothing wrong with her Aida. This is glorious & grand Ritorna Vincitor. But for Aida, I prefer a more lyric voice like Leontyne Price, Montserrat Caballe, Mirella Freni & Katia Ricciarelli. Dimitrova's voice is too heavy for the part of Aida which often calls for pianissimi and subdued, prayerful tones. She's a slave and a humble woman. Dimitrova is too magnificent!

  • @MastersoftheOpera Aida is not simply a slave. She's also a royalty.

  • One of the best Aida I ve ever heard...later she also performed Amneris too, like many big dramatic voices she has been able to sing both parts in this opera...GRANDE! Grazie!

  • IMMENSA ! .IMMORTALE !

  • @lamusicahera I've also discovered Aprile Milo and she's wonderful; very much an Aida voice. I also like Martina Arroyo and Fiorenza Cedolins. Gwyneth Jones and Birgit Nilsson were too heavy as Wagnerian sopranos to sing proper Aidas. Must be tough to sing Aida since clearly the notes are high and there's lots of fortissimi and dramatic soprano stuff but she also has those lyric soft pianissimi. For me the only Aida is Leontyne

  • @MastersoftheOpera ???? Katia Ricciarelli ??? LOL or better ROTFL !

  • @MastersoftheOpera and what do you think of carla martinis performing ritorna vincitor?

  • @operamusicfan As Ms.Price once stated, Aida was never a slave. She was instead a Princess in captivity......

  • Българска гордост!!!

  • @bodiloto : hai ragione carissimo amico, IMMENSA e IMMORTALE. Più la ascolto e più me ne convinco : il più grande soprano della storia del canto. Ciao !

  • Just great - a thrilling sound with both size and sensitivity! I must now hear how she fares in 'Casta Diva' ...

  • una meraviglia assoluta! irraggiungibile...

  • @operamusicfan. Yes that's true. I forgot that she was an Ethiopian princess who was captured and made into a slave. She was reduced to the position of slave though and she didn't act like royalty around Amneris. Egyptians were lighter-skinned than Ethiopians so this was also a "race" thing. She was considered inferior for being black. I think the music for Aida calls for a lyric voice that should not sound too grand.
