This amazing film footage cames from the last episode of the 1970s TV documentary series called "The Music of Man", hosted by Yehudi Menuhin. Steve Reich Ensemble performing his masterpiece "Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices and Organ". There are not too much info about this documentary series on internet, but I have found this: http://www.usc.edu/libraries/archives/schoenberg/videv078.htm , with a very detailed data of the series.
I just have this episode (#8: Sound or Unsound) recorded on VHS and I will digitalize it and upload it on its entire lenght (in several 10' parts) here in YouTube. It was recorded from the argentinian TV, so the narration is heard in spanish. (Thanks to "ShockTheseTrees" for the title info)

  • So nice warm soft and fuzzy this is.

I would love to see more footage of this performance and with out the narration. I know it has to exist somewhere!

(This piece is "Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices and Organ" btw. One of my favorites.)

  • hi... and thanks for the info about the title. If you agree I will quote it on this video info. Unfortunately there are no more footage of this performance on the rest of this episode, but even so I will post it entirely. There would be tons of this kind of music material on TV broadcast archives, several of them maybe forgotten (or non-catalogued). Thanks for your comment. Sergio Koval

  • Yes, you should include the title of the piece in the info. There is very little footage of this piece (or even of this era of Reich's career, for that matter) on youtube so I'm sure many people will be glad to be able to find it.

  • Updated. Thanks friend !

  • I'm delighted that you posted this here: also one of my favorite pieces and great to see it performed by the Ensemble around the same time it was composed.

  • Absolutely fascinating that this footage exists and is available... so interesting to see the musicians and Mr. Reich himself so many years ago... he has always performed his own compositions as part of an ensemble, and he once said that he had to do it in order to earn some money :-)

  • awesome footage!

  • great find
