Daytime comes
Bringing the light
Giving the sun
To nature's earth
Beautiful sounds
And the blue bird sings
A baby's cryin'
It's a brand new birth
It's a brand new birth

And the little girl smiled
When the little boy smiled
And the woman smiled
'Cos the man had smiled
And the great big world was smiling down
On them

Night-time comes
Heaven's curtains drawn
Stars shining bright
Way up above
Children pray
And the workers rest
Peace and quiet
Oh it's people in love
Yes people in love

And the little girl laughed
When the little boy laughs
And the woman laughs
As the man was laughin'
And the great big world
Was smilin' down on them

A distant land
A fearsome fight
Soldiers prayin'
Prayin' for peace
Suffrin' pain
And givin' their lives
For man's greed
Oh God make it cease
God please make it cease

And the little girl cried
When the little boy cried
And the woman cried
'Cos the man was cryin'
And this great big world was cryin' down
On them

  • @AbeGrimes Thanks for the comment, mate. I couldn't agree more, some songs are better performed with a simple arrangement.

  • Sorry I haven't replied to all your kind comments, it's great to hear from those who saw them live.

@slideharp1 I would've put exactly the same comment as you if someone else had put the song on Youtube.Have a good Christmas, mate.

  • @crabechef You're welcome!

  • @JIMMYBUSHIDO If you look for 'Walk On The Wild Side' by The Peddlers you'll find there's a live performance on Youtube from '71.

  • Thanks for all the comments guys - I've put the lyrics up now too. I guess it's been getting some airplay recently. That line about 'soldiers . . . giving their lives for man's greed' doesn't seem out of date, does it?

  • Thanks Gazza, Frida, Jdegas. The words of this song never seem to age. Or am I just an old fuddy-duddy?

  • When this came out, I was surrounded by Prog Rock and pop chart music. I must have been the only kid in my year who even noticed this. Something about Roy Phillips' voice and that piano arrangement. Used to play it on an old Dansette Viva record player with the continuous play arm up. I'm 15 again, in my room, playing it over and over. That last chord on the top end of the piano could be put on a continuous loop as far as I'm concerned. Sweet sound.

  • Wish there was a You Tube of them on TOTP playing this, somewhere.

  • There are some songs that really just need piano backing. And this is one of them. Heard it first when it came out, and it made me realise just what a good piano backing is. Love the chords. Would love to here this amplified, piano and vocals only in a huge hall.

  • I loved The Peddlers when I saw them on TV when I was a kid. This one made the charts. Cheers for this.

  • I have a signed copy of the album went to see them in solihull, great band got nearly all of there albums Andy Telford

  • Wat een heerlijke stem heeft deze man.

  • love the singer's voice, rounded and unusual - very special. I love this band.
