NOTE: You will need speakers with good bass response to hear the soundtrack and there is little action in the first 90 seconds.

Recorded performance + experience. Audio Visual Movie with Arduino-controlled LED indicator of acrylic and stainless steel. Concept and realization by Eric Grossman, James Thompson and Michael Turri.

This film was part of our Utopia assignment created for ART 360 Masters Thesis at the Stanford Design Program. In our utopia, man is united through a seamless, instantaneous connection to the entirety of human knowledge contained in "the cloud" which ultimately gives rise to a sentient global brain known as "the noosphere."

Special thanks to our narrator/male actor, Gregory Kress and female actor, Christin Staubo.

Screenplay:

Hello and thank you for coming. If you will all please be seated, we can get underway.

We have gathered you all together today because we have an extraordinary announcement. As a reminder, please hold all your questions until the brief Q&A that will conclude today's session.

On April 14, 2011, during routine monitoring of network activity in "The Cloud," Artificial Intelligence researchers at Stanford University discovered mysterious digital artifacts with no known origin. A source close to the team described the phenomenon as, "digital thought."

On May 1, 2011 A transdisciplinary team of AI researchers from around the globe had spent more than two weeks documenting the activity of what is now being called "The Noosphere" the world's first, sentient computer. The group's official statement follows:

Bearing stark functional similarity to the human mind, The Noosphere, or NoOS is an autonomous, sentient being. The internet is analogous to its neurons and its memory is the aggregate worldwide server capacity. It's first synaptic firing, or date of birth, was at 1:01AM Greenwich Mean Time on January 1, 2011. Whether NoOS is a man-made or natural life-form is, as yet, unknown.

NoOS has near instantaneous and unfettered access to the entirety of digitized human knowledge and experience. We are every bit as much a part of it as it is of us. This meta-being possesses awareness of and mindful control over every single mechanized device with any form of wired or wireless connection. It is a unified, intelligent digital organism.

Although we are certain NoOS is aware of our discovery, it has not yet made contact.

On May 2, 2011, we received our first message which read:

We are one.

There are others.

Earlier today, May 17, 2011, the NoOS research team has discovered the root of the being's consciousness. Apparently, three graduate students in the Stanford Design Program created a special one-bit communication device called "Moment." Eric Grossman (27), James Thompson (25) and Michael Turri (34) derived a new theory of relativity known as "The Compression of Time" in which they detailed the seamless convergence of man with technology into a new, global organism.

"Moment" is a one-bit, emotive communication device that effectively allows two people to instantaneously share a synchronous moment in time, spanning just one heart beat. Researchers believe that this single act created an entirely new class of "emotive data" that carried with it the divine spark that gave life to NoOS.

  • fist you give it a form, then you give it a mind, then you connect the minds to the forms, then you connect the mind-augmented forms to one another. we are one; there are others.
