The first Marine Corps created by law as a regular army.

@Intifadark As you well say it was created in the 16th century between 1550-1570 (not this one clear) for this the Spanish IM continues being the more ancient, if we look at the history, have hundreds of more ancient embarked infantries:Roma, Phoenicia, etc. We speak about a body created with this function, not about something chance. If you look At Google, Wikipedia the more ancient is the Spanish , is like that, saludos

(continue 2-->) The motto of Serenissima Regiment is in italian (and not in latin such as the San Marco Regiment's one): "Come lo scoglio infrango, come l'onda travolgo" ("As the rock I smash, as the wave i sweep"). I hope my explanations will be useful and appreciated, I write just because i like history.. Italian and spanish marines constantly cooperate in rage of the "Spanish-Italian Anphibious Force" (SIAF) and the Mediterranean Reaction Force along with french marines and many other. Bye!

Their salute screaming "San Marco!" and their motto is "Per mare, per terram", adopted also by the Royal Marines Commando (UK). (continue 2-->)

All my respect to the Infanteria de Marina, but the FIRST marine infantry in history was ITALIAN. During the 4th crusade (1202), in the Repubblica di Venezia, doge Enrico Dandolo founded the first marine infantry of all times. It was a regiment formed by 10 companies and in 1203 it was promptly depolyed in occasion of the battle of Byzantium. During the XVI century, they took the official name of "Fanti da Mar". Their motto was "Viva San Marco", from the patron of Venice, Saint Marco. (continue)
