A celebration of my sister bridget, who has had her first baby, Finn. I sang the song "vito's ordination song" by sufjan stevens, and her husband, our cousin and a couple close friends sang with me. I wrote the last verse to her son, Finn:

I always knew you in her barren womb.
I have heard her prayer.
I gave you life, breathed into your bones to make you leap for joy.
I heard the girl cry, "Roll away the stone"
And when the dead man's out, take off his clothes, and let him go, for I have overcome.

Most of the photos of Finn were taken by Jeremy Leffel.

Music recorded by Austin Thomason.

  • I have always thought of my little brother when I heard this song. I'm guessing the song evoked the same emotion for you in regards to your sister. I am a songwriter too and I appreciate your creativity. I've listened to your rendition so many times, what do you mean by And when the dead man's out, take off his clothes, and let him go, for I have overcome?

  • it is a reference to the resurrection of lazarus, drawing a parallel to life that was made from my sister's barren womb. I think Jesus wept also with her as he did with Mary and Martha-- and had the power to bring life life at last.

  • You have a beautiful voice, wonderful job.

  • thank you. It was a great project. really.... worthwhile.
