Act 3 scene 1
Kudrjás and Kuligan take shelter from an approaching storm in a ruined building near the river. They are joined by others including Dikoj to whom Kudrjás tries to give scientific explanations about the lightning rod and electricity. The pompous old man insists storms are the punishment of God. The rain eases and people begin to move on Kudrjás meets Boris and Varvara. Varvara tells them that Tichon has come back and Káťa is distraught with remorse and says she will confess everything. Then Kabanicha Tichon and Káťa appear. The storm starts to build up again and at first people think that Kat'a is upset because of this. But she falls on her knees and confesses her infidelity in front of everyone and runs out into the storm. Kabanicha is triumphant; she says she knew this would happen.

Nancy Gustafson, Felicity Palmer, Ryland Davies, Barry McCauley and Louise Winter in the Glyndebourne production conducted by Andrew Davis and directed by Nikolaus Lehnhoff.

Magnifico.
