At # 1 that week was "Endless Love" Diana Ross and Lionel Richie, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbeOaL8WJws&feature=related, it was it's 4th consecutive week out of 9 eventual weeks in that peak position.Song was written by Lionel Richie for the movie "Endless Love" which starred Brooke Shields.
This was Lionel's first number one song outside of his previous group "The Commodores", who achieved 2 number one songs under his direction,"Three Times A Lady" (1978) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5ruDqdZn_s, and "Still" (1979) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOuBy29hDgM. In 1980, Lionel wrote the # 1 song for Kenny Rogers "Lady" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tj_NjLBPotQ. Fast forward to 1982 and Lionel has his first solo lp released and the first single "Truly" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7e72sMIsKdg , hit the top spot in December 1982.From 1981 thru 1986, every single Lionel released was a Top 10 hit, 13 in total and 5 were # 1's.
The next 3 were:
"All Night Long" (1983) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiLziusKW4s
"Hello" (1984) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_ILDFp5DGA
"Say You, Say Me" (1985) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=we0mk_J0zyc , also taken from a movie "White Nights".
In total Lionel amassed 19 Top 100 hits with "The Commodores", 16 hit the top 40, 9 made the Top 10, and 2 reached # 1.On the solo side, he accumulated 18 Top 100 hits, 16 Top 40 and 13 Top 10's and 5 number ones!
Quite a feat in itself.
Ironically Lionel was in the Top 10 this very week with The Commodores with the song "Lady You Bring Me Up" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phNLASyPsUU.
What were the "odd" hits that were "Beyond the Top 10"?:
