A visit to the site of the Omaha Beach landings from 1944.

Please take a look at Video History Today http://www.videohistorytoday.com , the first web site to offer unique collections of re-usable original video clips designed for teachers and students.

The idea behind Video History Today is to give schools the raw material to make mini-documentaries and video essays on historical subjects.

Initial packages focus on World War I (Somme and Ieper areas), The Holocaust, the American Civil War and D-Day & Normandy 1944.

  • Is there any old ruins from the german fortification or have they all been removed?

  • There are hundreds of German concrete bunkers and other instalations along the entire French coastline. I have a few other videos on my channel of gun emplacements: the ones in the Pas de Calais area are particularly good. Even V1 and V2 rocket sites are still in place, many used by French farmers to store equipment or in one case cows.

Many are just too big to remove so the locals work around them.

  • Cool video. Although the landing into Normandy was overwhelming for the Allies. Germans had no chance. Omaha beach was the only place where they managed to put up some resistance.

  • Highly recommend the books by Joseph Balkoski(called 'Utah Beach' and 'Omaha Beach'). Quite chilling to read about individual stories about Omaha in particular and then visit the exact spot. Not sure if your WWII interest includes DDay but an interesting place to visit. (If Normandy did not have DDay, it would be a VERY dull place to visit- sorry Normans but it is)

  • thats pretty amzing how you are walking on history..i would love to go there , and just check everything out..great video man , nice work

  • any one who goes there make sure and look in the water and dig around real hard and im sure you will still find some ammo or equiment

  • dude is that really Omaha beach dude that is historically awesome it was one of the most bloodiest battles of ww2

  • BTW, that is not Pointe du Hoc. Pointe du Hoc cannot be seen from Omaha. That is Pointe et Raz de la Percee, where WN74 was located with its two 75mm or 76.2mm guns (accounts vary on what type of guns were there) that also raked the beach with fire. Great video though. thanx.

  • Excellent coverage. If you can't be there, this really helped. Made me feel I was on the walk with you. Thank you.

  • My biggest interests concerning WW2 are 1) Holocaust, and 2) Soviet-German war 1941-1945, especially the surprise attack that Stalin planned against Hitler in late summer 1941 (first intended to begin in 1942, but had to be hastened) that Hitler just in time pre-empted (books Stalin's War, Stalin's War of Extermination, Icebreaker: Who Started The Second World War). But who knows, if I ever visit France, I will visit Omaha Beach. Thanks for recommendations.
