This was always one of my favorite original episodes, despite the many mistakes made (photon torpedos shown when the order was made to fire phasers, Kirk getting thrown backward while the ship and everyone else was thrown to the left, etc).

Otherwise, the storyline is wonderful as well as tons of action!

Interesting to see all the fire, sparks and damage to the other vessels. Something you never really see in TOS. Not like Voyager and Deep space 9 where they pretty much blow the set up every battle

If one has watched both films, The Enemy Below, with Robert Mitchum as the American destroyer captain and Curt Jurgens as the German sub captain you will notice that the words are only slightly changed for the Star Trek episode. I think it,s cool though, as the movie is probably the best submarine flicks ever made.

One of the good things about this benchmark episode was its defiance of Campbell's edict that humanity can succeed against aliens only by moral ascendancy and never by technology or a stand up equal fight. Nothing against Campbell's overall genius but this was a weary concept after awhile demonstrated at how eager audiences were to see Starship Troopers blow hell out of alien bugs.

I have read that this episode of Star Trek "Balance of Terror" was based on the film the 1958 war film The Enemy Below. A battle of wits takes place between a US destroyer captain & a german U-boat captain. In ST, of course, the battle takes place in space. The late Mark Lenard gave such a great dignifed performance as the Romulan captain that he was personally chosen by Gene Rodenberry to play Spock's father Sarek in a later episode. It is my second fav. ep after "City on the edge of forever".
