Demonstration of a Pashley Tri-1 fitted with a Cyclone chain-drive electric motor system.
By driving the chain (rather than the wheels) the rear gears come into play: in low gear it has massive torque up to ~6mph. In top gear it can run at over 20mph on the flat.
Another approach is the pronto: uses a regular hub motor but drives the chainwheel.
Great for load hauling, shopping and folks with a balance problem. I have climbed 14% hills, carried 3 folded Bromptons and pulled a trailer.
