From what i can remember, Turmoil is a "multi-wave" game. That is, you repeatedly destroy all of the given enemies for each level or screen, moving onto the next.
I had months of fun with this game. If you're a Defender or Robotron fan (those old, chaotic shoot-em-up arcade games), you'll like this one, too.

Hot dogs, arrows, tanks and other Freudian things attack you. You shoot your own phallic gun back at them. Then the calm, lisping voice of the announcer at the end encourages you to partake in your own turmoil.
It's good enough to make you scream. :)
