One School System -Press Conference - July 30, 2007 -Part 1

The coordinator of International Campaign against Sharia Court in Canada opposes religious schools being incorporated into the public system.




Homa Arjomand calls a Press Conference at Queen's Park, Toronto, on Monday July 30th, 2007 at 11:00 AM.




In a press statement released by Opposition Leader John Tory on July 24,07, it stated, "Taxpayers should fund Islamic, Hindu, Jewish and other faith-based schools just like public and Catholic ones".




"Tory and his party have started a dangerous game, We, all concerned citizen and progressive forces will defeat John Tory as we did it in the struggle against faith based arbitration" said Ms. Arjomand.




Homa Arjomand, Coordinator of the International Campaign Against Sharia Court in Canada along with other activists, is calling a press conference to demand one secular public school system.




"We declare that the rights of the child should take precedence over any national, racial, economic, political, ideological, and religious consideration or interest; Complete separation of religion from education; the State is obliged to ensure a uniform school system for all children under the age 18; No one has the right to prevent the child from all norms and standards of the main stream society and it is the duty of the State to protect the universal rights of the children; no one has a right to segregate children and place them under religious dogmas, traditions and habits; no one has a right to prevent the child from participating in social and leisure activities and prohibiting them from participating in dancing, singing, playing an instrument." We therefore call on the Ontario Provincial Government not to violate the rights of the child. The time has never been more right than today as we call for one secular school system for all children and no funding for any faith-based schools.

About the Campaign

Homa Arjomand is the Coordinator of the International Campaign Against Sharia Court in Canada and chairperson of Cultural Bridges Association. She started her campaign in Toronto in October 2003 with a handful of supporters, and today it has grown to a coalition of 87 organizations from 14 countries with over a thousand activists. In February 2006, the Ontario Government passed legislation which ended the use of religious laws for family arbitration. Since then, the Campaign has focused its efforts on stopping political Islam globally. Homa is now Coordinator of a campaign called "No to political Islam" and is a human rights activist she was forced to flee Iran in 1989.

We have catholic schools because our society was built on this religion.....our values have grown out of this religion.....we have become Candians with catholic values even if we aren't practicing catholics.....these schools should remain...maybe not expand any more of them...but no other religious schools of any kind should be created....muslims must have respect for this country and it's rich history.....they are part of this free democracy and they should be allowed to know us....

all CANADIAN children should be required by law to attend public schools....they must learn our history..correctly.....and learn about what has lead up to this free country.....we have fought for this......it should never be given away to barbarians from Saudi Arabia.....to teach hatred for western cultures and non-muslims right here on Canadian soil.....no religious schools!!!!

I believe in a universal, secular school system. I also believe that many schools do a poor job of safeguarding their students safety and well-being. If we conscript children and force them into schools, we have a responsibility of giving them an excellent education.

If a government considers that children should be protected against physical and sexual abuse, then tell me why their minds should be any less important? No parent or school should be able to impose a religion on a child. It is simply inappropriate considering how easily children's minds accept whatever is rammed in there.

I support any movement to make it illegal to indoctrinate a child under the age of 16-18 in any religion or in anything that is not of benefit to the child's development.
