His longest concert tour took Henri Herz to America from 1845 until 1851. During this time he crossed America three times, held more than 400 concerts and visited Havanna, Vera Cruz, Mexico (for which he composed the national anthem), California and Chile. His concerts have been sold-out and this Mexican fantasy arose during his stay in America.
While it's main melodic basis is the North American song "O Susanna" it gets its Mexican style from the triumphal recital of the Mexican national anthem at the end.

Thomas Emmerling plays.

  • Stephen Foster's "O Susanna"? Are you sure?

  • Positive! It shines through in the introduction and you can hear it clearly at 1:49.

  • Memories of Pepperdine come back into this fine playing: one of the discovered neglects...

  • @Astardis Very obvious, agreed.

  • 1 Schumann disliked it :)

  • @Astardis What might be Hertz's motive in introducing Foster's theme here?

  • Poet Francisco Gonzalez Bocanegra wrote the National Anthem of mexico, he wrote it as a poem. Jaime Nuno composed the music for it. Sometimes is called, "Mexicans, at the cry of war". Please get your facts correct, thank you.

  • i agree that henri herz composed a mexico national anthem, but it wasnt accepted, then another composer came and composed the actual anthem... im saying this because i your description you are saying that he composed the actual one

  • Well played. Why not take life lightly, for a while. In stead of torturing your poor head with Beethoven and Schumann all week. Herz is a fine composer, sadly underrated. A medal is ready for you for defending him.

  • grat!!! but its veracruz !!! togheter !... thx to shere with us!!
