FILM YOUR ISSUE - 2008: Unnatural: A Zombie Movie

A semi-finalist to the 2008 Film Your Issue, by Jessie Simek, then 23, of Holley, New York. A survivor holds out long enough to record for the outside world how genetic modification of food brought about the zombie plague in the United States. Says Jessi: "I made this film because frankenfood scares the everloving heck out of me, and I think if more people knew about it they'd be scared as well. The process through which these foods are made and what exactly goes into them seems incredibly unsafe (I know I don't want to eat any food that emits its own pesticide), we don't have enough data on what a lifetime of these foods building up inside our systems will do to our health, there aren't labeling requirements for them so it's almost impossible to catalog possible reactions to them, and it's also almost impossible to keep these foods from spreading once they've been released into the natural environment. If that isn't terrifying I don't know what is.

We thought it was a wonderfully made film. We have since changed the criteria to focus more on pragmatic solutions, than an artistic, cinematic approach to issues.

Food is f'ing nasty. Most people don't even know what everyday stuff they eat really is. More then 95% of people I meet don't even know marshmellows are made of pig skin and bone marrows and the cruel shit they do to animals to make their bones soft. Imagine standing in a pen for 10 years not being able to move..
