Beautiful RCA 262 5 Band Allwave Receiver. Part 2
Doing some preliminary checks. Power transformer looks OK so far. I ran power to it for 10 minutes and got approprite voltages for the AC to the rectifier, and also got the 6.3 volts for the tube filaments and the 5 volts for the rectifier filament. Also ohmed out all coils and transformers.

  • Your variac, can I use a dimmer switch like you would use in a light switch. I.E. I would have a heavy duty extention cord about t 12" long that would be connected to a dimmer switch, that would be connected to a GFI outlet? The GFI would be for safety. What do you think. I also been tinkering with old radios...I have a 1936 Zenith 5S150 wooden consol an a 1953 Philco Transitone 53-561. I dig your videos, that an the library books on old radios I been reading have been a big help.

  • Wow! that's a really good question. I wish I had a really good answer for that. I guess check the package the dimmer switch comes in for intended uses. The radio like I have pulls about 1 Amp. I am not sure if the dimmer switch changes the AC sinewave form somewhat due to the electonics inside the dimmer. A variac wouldn;t change the sinewave at all. You have realy nice radios. Check out antique radios web site for the blogs. I learned a lot from them.

  • I gave it some more thought. I highly recommend a VARIAC plugged into an isolation transformer. The isolation transformer can help protect you from possible electrocution. It's better being safe.

  • So, where do I find an isolation transformer an a variac? I'm nervouse about ebay, cause I don't wanna buy faulty safety equipment?

  • I got both my isollation transformer and the variac from 2 different vendors on Ebay. The isolation transformer was pristine. the Variace had a little wear to it and needed some repairs. The socket was worn and I installed a short pigtail and new socket. Try google or yahoo to seach for these things if you don;t wish to use Ebay. You might find new isolation and variacs on Ebay from reputable Vendors or at least get manufacture names and search the internent for those manufacturerers.

  • i love to repair and restore old radios i been doing this for 10 years glad to see that there are people who love to repair old radios i restored a old rca victor 96t6 by adding new electrolitic capicators it had a very bad hum before i restored it

  • Thanks, Im gonna search for them.

  • Cool, I don't feel as bad about not having the original speaker now!

Dp you have any other tips you can give me?

I don't even know the questions to ask.

Actually I just thought of one. If one of the IF 460 KHz transformers turns out bad, coould it be replaced with a 455 KHz transformer? or is it better to bypass the transformer with a resistor and capacitor?

  • If the power transformer is good there is a good chance that the field coil on the speaker burnt out, which saved the transformer. And that good.
