According to Spanish law the police can check the identity of people in public places when there is a security concern, for example when a crime has been committed in the area. However, Amnesty International research has revealed that deliberate identity checks on foreigners in the absence of any security concern are widespread.
Certain police stations in Madrid have been given weekly and monthly quotas for the number of irregular migrants they have to detain thus encouraging officers to target people belonging to ethnic minorities.
Racial profiling, when the police stop to question and arrest people because of their skin colour does not always amount to discrimination, but is discriminatory and illegal according to international law if it has no reasonable or objective justification.
This campaign film features Matteo de Bellis, Amnesty International Campaigner, on location in Spain.
You can't blame Spain for checking peoples' IDs, after a bunch of Islamic thugs killed 191 people in Madrid in 2004, there's going to be some fear and paranoia, there always is after terrorist attacks.

@viniciusb Maybe less crime compared to the percentage of Americans vs. illegals, but that's not true either because being here illegally is a crime, which makes them a criminal by default. I don't think jobs are the problem, I think it's the ideologies of different ppls. For instance America was founded a Christian nation, and I think Christianity is what made America what it is. The jobs will come with the ppl having good ideologies.

@stevehauk The problem buddy, is that there is no problem. Illegals here in America are NOT stealing jobs, they are creating them. I just read a report on farms being shut down because they can't find Americans to do the work even for $300/day. But then you'd say, why don't they pay even more? To which I would say, because no one can pay 5 bucks for a tomato. Another stat you should know is that illegal immigrants commit less crime than native Americans, thus lowering the overall crime rate.

Very nice work Matteo, they were trying to pass a federal law that would allow the police to do the same here in the US. In fact, Arizona did pass a law that gives them the authority to stop a random person and ask for documentation only based on appearance which is the definition of racism.

Thats 100% true.. I live in Center of Madrid. When ever i am outside of Home I am in fear that police might take me jail for being illegal. Thats to sad. Some may not understand the fact but after all we are human and we have right to live. or dont we have it?

What if the majority of illegals in Mexico were Americans--then doesn't it make sense to check Americans? Even if it is an unpleasant experience? Within guidelines of course, but how else would you stop the problem?
