'An awe-inspiring Northumbrian Stone Cross stands eighteen feet high at Ruthwell, now in Dumfriesshire. Carved on one of its sides are the words spoken by Christ's Cross. Someone in the Ninth Century expanded this, and with raw imagination turned it into one of the greatest Christian poems of the age.This song was written from the viewpoint of the tree turned into a cross upon which Christ was crucified
