A complex trough of low pressure is moving slowly eastwards onto the North Island today, along with cooling temperatures in the upper atmosphere. Several bands of heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected over the north and west of the North Island and the top of the South Island today. There is a high risk of thunderstorms from Northland down to Taranaki and the Bay of Plenty, along with Nelson and northern Marlborough, although thunderstorms are expected to ease over Northland this afternoon then over Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula this evening. These thunderstorms may produce localised rainfall rates of 10 to 25mm/hr, hail of 10 to 20mm diameter, wind gusts of 90 to 110km/hr(although wind gusts of 80 km/h are expected for Nelson and northern Marlborough), and a few small tornadoes. There is also a low risk of SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS for these areas with the chance of a damaging tornado. A lesser risk of a few thunderstorms extends
over northern Gisborne,Taupo,Taumarunui and southern Taranaki.
