Tola Mankiewiczówna (1900-1985) - Polish singer and actress, immensely popular in Poland in pre-war times for her opera, operetta, cabaret and film appearances and vocal productions.
Recorded not many sides.

The present "La Paloma" as "Zapomniana melodia" (A Forgotten Melody) was prepared for Mankiewiczowna for her circus-revue performance which engaged in 1935 artists of the highest rank: Tola was singing that song and keeping in her hands trained pigeons.

  • Jerzy,

You manage to convey so much in your presentations! The feeling here of past times and of time passing is powerful and moving.

Thank you for this memorable piece!

    A.

  • The phenomenon of time passing

is what intrugues me more and more

    - with passing time, indeed.

You moved me with you reception, A.

    J.

  • Tola Mankiewiczówna, beautiful voice jurek. This is the first Tola. I found little on the net for TM, except a her performance in Stravinsky's Warszawska which doesn't appear to be available.

  • Mankiewiczówna started from a role in Faust as Margarete, being hardly 18; then went to Italy for further voice training and there(!) - according - Wanda Wermińska, great Polish mezzo and Tola's friend, they (!) "widened" her voice too much.

    Anyway, Mankiewiczówna from 30's

started to appear in lighter repertoire as

    well as in the moovies.

    Thanks, P.

    J.

A "family couple" who decided to spend their honey-moon period

in that region...long, long time ago. They do not live while the place

    is still recogniseable...:)

Greetings from South of Poland full of heat !

  • Splendid version of this beloved song with a beautiful voice and delicate orchestration. Pretty period picture of your relatives among the Venetian palomas.
