UC Berkeley astrophysicist George Smoot, winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physics, is the director of the newly-launched Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics. He contributed half a million dollars of his own Nobel prize money to make the center a reality. The total gifts for the BCCP now total 8.1 million.

Chancellor Robert Birgeneau, astrophysicists George Smoot and Saul Perlmutter, and Mark Richards, executive dean of the College of Letters and Science were the speakers at a December 4, 2007 event announcing the launch of the new center.

  • How selfless and generous of Dr. Smoot. It's this kind of philanthropy that ensures the advancement of science.

  • I dont buy expanding space! Why? Because you cant proof expanding space! Why? because you cant see space! You cant make a any test with space. it is same, if you say, there it is god or angel. You cant see angel. You cant proof angel. Are you science people or people believe?
