friggin hell, where did this come from? I used to live in one of the flats above this shopping centre in mid 1970's Pubs were mostly crap apart from one near the old theatre -Kings Arms or something?? Bass House was for chavs and grunts - sorry guys. Used to go to the Fox at Newfound or the Barley Mow in East Oakley - How sad was that?? A blast from the past, Thanks for posting man.
What a great piece of history. Our family moved to Basingstoke in 1970, when I was 6 yrs old. I have fond memories of the 'old town centre' from both childhood & teen years (the ABC cinema) and as a young woman who used to go out to such places as Martine's and The Bass House! Festival Place is great, there's no denying that, but I have a place in my heart for the cold, grey concrete of the very retro 60's architecture.
This was the 1960's? It hasn't changed a bit! Except there are more tracksuits, big gold hoop earings, knackered Reebok classics and poorly customised 1991 Fiestas there now! (sorry Basingstoke, but you really don't help yourself do you....)
This looks more like an early 70's cine film of the then "New" town centre. One view is of the New Market Square - the film-maker stood opposite to what was Knights the record shop. Wote Street used to run along the front edge of the New Market Square up until around 1967. The part that may be from the late sixties is the footage of a derelict Lower Brook Street. The Roundabout in front of Brook House is named after the Victory public house which stood there before the redevelopment.
oh dear lol i know it was in the 60's but still it looked pretty bad and in my opinion could still do with some improvement now in some parts but it is definitely better than it was.
Valuable piece of film. Amazing.
