What is this NES

Update: I know what this thing is now thanks to "Nuftetuft" on screwattack.com

What is this thing? It's something to the NES but what? It don't fit into to the NES, the cable can't connect anywhere on the console.

(For the record: I can play the games today since I bought an American NES console, but I'm still puzzled about what this thing is.)
