@truehebrew100 I'm also very confused how the Torah & Tanakh have nothing to do w/ religion when they clearly discuss religious rituals, methods, etc. They talk about the high priest, the laws and so on. They also talk about the Jewish peoples role in the world, their history, their government systems, etc.
-
@truehebrew100 Also Judaism is a religion, but to be a Jew you belong to an ethnic group, a religion, a nation (as an Israelite), a culture - in other words, a people. Some will abandon certain aspects such as the religion, culture or maybe not be ethnically Jewish but by embracing religion you become part of the nation, etc. The Jewish people have always been referred to as a Nation in the bible and have always thought of themselves as such.

@truehebrew100 On top of the 3 million Sephardi Jews in Israel there are also Mizrahi Jews (middle eastern jews) of which there are approx. 4-5 million living in the world today. So clearly Ashkenazi Jews can not make up much more than 50% of the Jewish population today. Ashkenazi's are German Jews (thats what Ashkenaz means, it means German)- it has come to refer to Western Jews who share a similar cultural background, diet, etc. Sephardi Jews are ones originally exiled to Spain.

@truehebrew100 Ashkenazi is not an ethnic group, it is a cultural group. Not 95% of Jews today are Ashkenazi - there are 3 million Sephardi Jews alone living in Israel. To be an Yisraelite you are a descendant of Jacob (renamed Israel, who had 12 children each corresponding to the 12 tribes) - giving you an entire history lesson would take to long. That theory about Khazars has easily been debunked and DNA evidence shows that the majority of jews have ME ancestry.

@volkan63 Abraham didn't have a religion!

@Excpired Convert to what? Judaism is a religion! The Torah and Tenach does not have anything to do with religion. Ashkenazi are from what tribe of Israel? Ashkenaz was a descendant of Noah's son Japeth through Gomer. To be an Israelite or Yahudiy you must come through Noah's son Shem. 95% of all Jewish people in the world today are Ashkenazi Jewish. They are of Khazarian origin. The Khazars converted as an entire kingdom during the eighth century.

@truehebrew100 Jewish is a term coined to describe the remnants of the tribe of Judah who lived in the Kingdom of Judea (southern kingdom of the Israelites, northern kingdom was Israel). Not all Jews are from the tribe of Judah but the majority are, the name stuck after Rome exiled the remaining Israelites of Judea (renamed Palestine). Anyone who converts becomes a Jew, or an Israelite. A chosen of G-d.

@thatsmrtoyoubuddy thanks for the modest insight brother, the more I read the Talmud and Rabbi steinsaltzs'
teachings, the less I care about being laughed at or scrutinized by other more observant jews, another really cool
jew is arthur kerzweil,he basically says a jew has to practically fight his way in...he writes about his hasidic
visits...he was an outsider who was invited to dinner...I forget what Mitzvah it was...
I'll continue the story in your inbox...
:o)

no where in the bible is there a religion called judaism nor christianity. you all are taking a hebrew culture and making a religion out of it.

The term Jew (Yehudi) comes from the fact that after the kingdom of Israel split the southern kingdom was called Judah (Y'hudah), all citizens of Judah were called Jews. Jewish is just a term as we are call American, or Spanish. Jewish is not used because of religion or a convert.
@dldnjswns99 cont... while there might not be a shul near, you can still work towards it- for instance, start weeding out your fridge of all non kosher foods... start eating kosher....... start cutting back on activites you do on SHabbat that would likely classify as "Breaking shabbat" ...I assume you try not to lie or covet, i assume you dont murder.. so as far as most of the torah that is applicable to the average "joe" you probably obey most of it, just by normal life!!!

I'm sure these notes can have an impact on understanding the early followers of Jesus.
They will not change my understanding of moshiaH (messiah), because this doesn't depend on the N.T. If you want my opinions of moshiaH to change, you must stick with the Tanakh.
Perhaps the notes can change or fortify my understanding as to the monotheism or faithfulness to Torah of the early Christians -- which is important to me... but it won't impact my understanding of Torah.
