Tumut #2 power station (T2), near Cabramurra in the Snowy mountains, is one of the only two such underground complexes in Australia, T1 being the other.
The entrance is guarded by a security bi-fold gate to deter unauthorised entry (more to protect people from danger than anything else) and this short clip shows the entrance as I start the descent of the vehicular tunnel into the mountain-side and the station underneath.
This station used to be open to visitors but has not been accessible for some years. Neither of the two underground stations have tourist access now, which is a pity as the experience is unique when compared to that of an above-ground facility.
Outside the tunnel entrance there is a public rest-area, with toilets and covered picnic amenities, that remains open to passing travellers.
The occupants of the vehicle shown near the entrance were using these facilities at the time of my visit.
More to follow. Just search hcrun.
