This song is very dear to me of course i was born same year,The tune was titled 'Dark Island' for a 1963 TV production of the same name. Both David Silver and Stewart Ross wrote different lyrics at almost exactly the same time to the same tune. The BBC film "The Dark Island" was filmed mainly in South Uist, but the name refers to Benbecula, between the North and South Uists in theOuter Hebrides. The pictures are all mostly of Benbecula which refers to The Dark Island, this tune by the Alexzander Brothers which i like best.

  • As an Englishman (whose father was a Scot) I just have to say that this piece can reach right inside the hardest heart and move it. In a hundred years from now, no-one will remember modern pop stars. But this tremendous anthem will still be here. In time it will become a classic in the truest sense of the word.

    Great vid, BTW :o)

  • @Astronotus57 why thank you very much how kind, yes i think actualy this version is the best one as i was brought up with this one only thing thats missing from this song is the seagulls at the end, i had a record ha yes a RECORD not CD and it had the Alexzander brothers playing this with seagulls which i liked, this is Alexzander bros but somehow the gulls were left out by whoever made the new album.

  • great song this is, one of my granny's favourites. great video with the photos.

  • @MrDhamilton01 thanks, yes my granny's fave to but also mine.

  • This song had me in floods of tears last night while watching a program about the Edinburgh military tattoo. Look at my country, as comedian Billy Connelly puts it- "is that not just a wee bit great?"

  • @TartanBiscuit lol i was in tears also watching the Edinburgh Tttoo last night in fact i wished i had taped it but my video recorder isnt tuned into the new tv, but i cried also at that part actualy i cried at a lot of parts :)
