VICTORIA - The Provincial Government is committing 4.25 million dollars to end the homeless problem in Greater Victoria.
4 million will go to expanding Swift House, at the current Street Link Shelter. The other $257,600 will go to creating emergency shelter beds around the city in the next four months.
Two shelter spaces are already under construction - one on Humboldt Street and the other on Ellice. In all, 170 more spaces will be created.
The Police and the City say this is a step in the right direction, and the new spaces will get people off the streets.
The Greater Victoria Coalition to End Homelessness says shelter use is on the rise in the city. Overnight stays have increased by 2.4% in a one year period.
