i'd say it's ignorant just to believe that you can train a dog, it's not ignorant to study dogs because you might miss something even if you studied on your own. you have to understand that view on the relationship dog-owner and on training is different in other cities, other countries, generations, and so on. that is why you need some "standardized" texts, practice and good instructors to lead you the right way. then you can start developing your own method.

I'm very concerned that you're advocating for people to just call themselves a dog trainer and get going. Sadly, the profession is unregulated & yes people can give themselves pretty much any title they want, but that is completely irresponsible. People should apprentice under a certified trainer, study learning theories, and develop an academic background and knowledge in their field. Your words undermine all the work people have put into becoming qualified, competent trainers.

Hey Zak! Can you please help me out? I have a 1yr old Fila Brasileiro & she's pretty good at obeying my commands etc. Her only issue is that she gets SUPER feisty when she is eating food and there's other dogs around. She also gets this way with her water & any toys! Any human can stick their hand in her mouth while she's eating or play with toys etc & she's ABSOLUTELY FINE. It's only when there are other dogs around- I cannot give her a treat, food, toy or water. Please help!!
Thanks!!

I've found that dealing with the owners, not the dogs, is the hardest part of being a trainer. I'm not a full time trainer and I don't think I could ever do it full time simply because of how ignorant and misunderstanding people are of their dogs. Perhaps it's me.....

I got into dog training in a similar way to Zak.................had some competitive success on the disc dog field and wanted to do it fulltime. So I immersed myself in everything dog. Took agility, obedience, trick classes; read anything I could get my hands on. Watched vids and dvds. And most importantly, I networked and spoke with as many trainers as I could. Dog training is forever a learning process! I am grateful to be able to do what I love for a living!

@askel89 The dog professional industry is unregulated. That may change 10 or so years from now. But as I said in another comment there are schools you can to that are highly recommended. There's the Dog Walking Academy run by Veronica Boutelle for dog walkers. And then there is Pat Miller's training school in Maryland. Terry Ryan has her own training school in Washington as well. Both of these women are very well known around the world and have published several dog training books.

Great video, zak. Thanks for the reminder that, "the way to learn is to teach."
And although I agree with what zak says here... there are still some good schools you can go to. Pat Miller's school in Maryland is very highly rated. And it's a good idea to have some kind of credential when advertising your dog training services.
Thumbs up for dog at 1:38 :D
