There are currently 22 goldfish in Dobby's pool. Their purpose is to eat the mosquito larvae. Plus, I just like fish. They were 29 cent feeder fish in August 2009, and a year later are about 3-4" long. They made it right through that freeze last winter. I don't use chlorine and the water greens up pretty fast in spite of the organic treatments I use (barley extract, beneficial bacteria, etc) but thankfully Dobby doesn't poop in his swimming pool. The fish do, though!

  • How does he get in and out of the pool. Does he get in the pool when it is cold?

  • @BanPhotoRadar There is a small ladder fastened at one side. It has big wide steps he can get out on. On the outside of the pool are some straw bale steps. He swims all year round, though he doesn't swim when the air temperature drops below 32 degrees. He now has an outdoor bathtub with hot running water which may have some appeal now that we are in a cold snap. Last year I hauled buckets of hot water to his wading pool!

  • @hippopotatomus Do you feed the goldfish any extra food?

  • @KerryAnnePhysics I feed the goldfish seasonally, just some flake food. And I drop greens (watercress) in there occasionally. It's pretty sporadic, but when I saw how huge they had gotten, and how many survivors I have, I decided whatever I was doing was okay. It's pretty dark at the bottom of the pool and they don't come up much this time of year. I see them a lot at the top eating bugs in the summer.
