From teen singing sensation Hunter Hayes to a local dojo owner and a school board member, angels spread their wings over Chelsea this week to keep life from raining on her any harder. Home is where the heart is, but when a teenage girl has been living in a minvan with her mom for eight months, it's easy to lose heart and her internal compass for home.
Norfolk Karate Academy, Warren Stewart (advocate from For Kids), Pi Beta Phi at ODU and Chelsea's favorite Performer Hunter Hayes came together to turn things around for Chelsea, 16, of Norfolk, Virginia. It's not a permanent solution, she and her mom will be right back in the minivan come Monday morning, but it got her spirit out of park.
I don't know Chelsea, other than having seen an online Christmas request from her mom asking for a solid meal for Christmas diner, which my Facebook friends and I supplied. But when we found out things had not improved we put out the word and each of us made 3 calls to anyone we thought could help. My three: Bill Odom of NKA, Warren Stewart and Hunter Hayes. I hit the trifecta! Help is still needed and welcome. We are stonewalled when it comes to housing. Contact Lisa Suhay Lsuhays3@gmail.com or via NiceChess.net where I volunteer with at-risk kids.
