@Sjpanda I realized it would be unfair to ask you to explain your favorite part of techno without first explaining my favorite part of bands like Pendulum.
The reason I like music with noticeable 'drops' and downswings, along with faster beats, is I like to close my eyes and imagine certain things, like driving a motorcycle very fast, while listening to music, and those beats are conducive to that. Classical, for instance, is not particularly useful in that case. How about you? :)
@Sjpanda I love Wikipedia, but I don't trust what they say about music as much. They classified Katy Perry as 'Hard Rock' for like 3 years, when she couldn't be more Pop/Top 40. I can definitely see how they could classify Pendulum as dubstep, however. I suppose dubstep to me means something different than most people, I always think of things more like Falling by Distance and Katy B remixes, because that's what I've heard. What's your favorite part of techno?
@TheNightlithium Agreed. It's impossible to explain why you like a genre to other people. Depending on if you take wikipedia as a reliable source, Pendulum's music is considered electronic rock, drum and bass, house and dubstep.
@Sjpanda And also I definitely don't understand techno, but I don't want to be unreasonably biased against it, so if you could explain it to me it would be greatly appreciated. And if you can't, I understand, I have trouble explaining to old people why I like rock and roll, because what are you going to say? "Hear the guitar? It's so awesome!" -them holding their ears-
But if you're willing to give it a shot I'll absolutely listen with an open mind. (or read, whatever)
That's what I've been saying, it's not my type of music. Pendulum is drum and bass, they don't use dubs, so it's not dubstep. The reason I don't like dubstep because there's overkill on the bass, the music rarely drops out of the 'smash you over the head with it' range, and they constantly remix Top 40 nonsense into it. I don't want to hear Kanye singing over some overdone baseline. I want to hear the artist themselves singing over an alternating baseline. That's my preference. :)
I don't really care for dubstep. I just want music I can listen to while coding, for hours on end, where the lyrics aren't too engaging (like techno, since it has no lyrics usually) but the music isn't boring (like techno, there's no progression of time, no noticeable moments, beginning, or end).
The good news is, a friend of mine recently introduced me to Pendulum (D&B) which satisfies exactly what I was talking about! :D
the one with the intro ftw. The original song just makes me sad... there's never any 'drop', know what I mean? I just wish there was some techno that wasn't like a bad handjob; so very much buildup, and it never pays off. Can I just get one techno song that builds up and then *BAM* sudden, epic payoff? Just one, that's all I need to code in peace for hours on end. Thanks and cookies to anyone who can point me in the right direction.
@hotataho: there are at least 4 versions of this loop that i know - one with only the loop; one with the intro animation - the coin; and two with a loader and start-button

@TheNightlithium you either don't understand techno, or it simply isn't your type of music. Pendulum slightly falls under dubstep.
