The beginning and end are awesome. The middle... Not so much. This is a West facing view of Sydney's skyline taken from Kings Cross towards the city over twelve hours.

It was shot with a tripod mounted Sony TRV-900 Handycam's built-in time lapse and sped up with iMovie.

Youtube's sucky resolution means you can't really see the fine detail during daylight hours (the middle of the clip) including trains, people, muggings and frantic construction cranes. The end's worth it though.

The lens was totally clean beforehand, but the slight buildup of dirt you can see later in the video is a single day's accumulation of smog from the major roads and construction in the area over the whole period.

The slight glitch at 1m57s was introduced by the Firewire export, but editing it out would have ruined the wonderfully coincidental synch with the music in the remainder of the clip.

Background Music is called "Give it Away" by Zero 7.

  • haha i love time lapses and i usually cut off the sound to play Give it Away from my ipod, and to my surprise I hear Give it Away !!! Great choice :D

  • @fabregas0415 Thanks. It was a toss-up between that song and something by Rammstein. I think it worked out better this way...

  • howd you time lapse like that with one tape?

  • By taking a single frame every few minutes.

In total, it would have used less than two or three minutes of tape.

Most high-end cameras (including the TRV-900 at the time) have a built-in time lapse record feature. For the ones which don't you could probably hook them to a laptop with Firewire (or USB) and use third-party software to achieve the same thing.

  • wats better the trv900 or trv950?

  • No idea mate. Sorry.

  • This is a great movie, Sydney is a beautiful city for this kind of photography. Keep it up!

I'm planning on doing one of these in Melbourne.

@moe96699669: I live in Melbourne and I know that some of us dislike other cities, but this is just rude, offensive and unacceptable.

  • oh my jesus, breath taking !

I live in Stockholm - Sweden, but this is also SO BEAUTIFUL !

    I love it !

I must say the best part was when the sun went down again and just when it got behind the building, the lighting was nice.

anyway yeah, make more time lapses ! :O

  • Witness a product of the Victorian education system.

  • Nice music and great footage! I think you should use a DSLR camera next time for better quality.
